I believe the heater core in that vehicle is located behind the dashboard.
You should probably bring it to a mechanic because it is very difficult to replace the heater core on GMC pickups.
Yep and the core is a pain to replace.

GMC Typhoon was created in 1992.
A diagram of the heater core of a 2001 GMC Jimmy can be found in the service manual. It outlines the location of all the components and how they are connected.
Leaking heater core. Replace it.
Normally between $800 - $1,000..its 80% labor & 20% part..
Its best if you get a repair manual for this because there are too may steps to list plus the heater core is in the center and the dash will need to be pulled, book time for this is around 13.0 hours............
The heater core is located behind the dash board behind the radio / pass air bag. It's really deep in there and you would have to removed either the lower part of the entire dashboard to get to it.
With great difficultly! Seriously, the entire dash assembly needs to be removed to gain access to the heater core. I would recomend purchasing a shop manual for the vehicle if you intend on doing the job yourself.
Disconnect them from heater core and with a coupling and 2 hose clamps tie them together
go to autozone.com. and click on the heater core part for your sonoma. then there should be an install manual button u click on on the page. i have a 98 gmc wit a heater core out also. i think the 97 models you just have to take off the dash.
You'll have to take the dash loos and all the electrical wireing then remove the dash from the vehicle. From there you'll have a brace over the block holding the heater core in place. Remove the brace and screws from the top cover, slide the core out and replace in reverse steps.
Wow ..... very uncommon failure. We have dashboard removal instructions on our enthusiasts forum that will probably help. www.trailvoy.com
You disconnect the hoses. Then remove the heater core cover from the engine compartment (oblong black thing bolted to the firewall on your left hand side, looking in). Wrestle that off and extract the heater core...swap out your new core and replace it all. It is that easy. I put in a coolant flush kit while I had it apart...flush your coolant system every few months for nothing. Good luck
read the instructions and find out!
