Replacing a transmission is not terribly difficult, although one should have a moderate mechanical background before starting the job. It will take the 1st time home mechanic a day or two to do this job. Start by purchasing a good shop manual such as a "Hanes manual". This manual will have step by step instructions and illustrations.

I have had a similar problem with my 1991 Wrangler. I found if you can pull the 4X4 stick past the 4 high the push it back up it may engage. That worked for me. The problem was ultimately fixed when I had the transmission rebuilt.
