How do you install a thermostat on a 1997 Jeep Cherokee?

I have a 93 Jeep Cherokee and what we've found is that we can never find the right part, even from the dealer. Chrysler seems to have a really bad part inventory on this model. What we've done is to call Chrysler directly and ask customer service for the part number and then look for the part that way. I don't know how to change it, but we found a very good mechanic in Los Angeles, CA. Good luck

Drain the coolant from the radiator until the level is below the thermostat housing # Remove radiator upper hose and heater hose at thermostat housing. # Disconnect wiring connector at engine coolant temperature sensor. # Remove thermostat housing mounting bolts, thermostat housing, gasket and thermostat , Discard old gasket. # Clean the gasket mating surfaces. == # Install the replacement thermostat so that the pellet, which is encircled by a coil spring, faces the engine. All thermostats are marked on the outer flange to indicate the proper installed position. ## Observe the recess groove in the engine cylinder head ## Position thermostat in groove with arrow and air bleed hole on outer flange pointing up # Install replacement gasket and thermostat housing # Tighten the housing bolts to 22 N

Drain about 1 gallon of coolant from the radiator Remove this housing Note how thermostat is installed Clean both surfaces Replace thermostat and housing Re-fill coolant slowly to prevent an airlock Start engine and look for leaks Run engine to normal operating temperature with heater Re-check coolant level

take off the bolts to the old one dont drop in engine place some gasket sealer on the new one and replace dont over tighten the bolts.
