If it's like my 96 eclipse then the alternator is on the back of the motor bottom passenger side... hard to get to but if you jack the car up about a foot you should have a decent amount of space back there... just disconnect the wires and unbolt the alternator... make sure you unbolt the one on the adjuster side first so nothing pops out so to speak

ANswer:

Depends on the motor, on the 4G63T its on the Diverside under the Power Steering pump. theres a tensioner bolt on the bottom and a bolt in the bracket (12MM) and a bolt on the bottom that is just a guide pin. once you loosen the bolt in the bracket and the tensioner the belt comes off then pull the pin, the electrical connector and you should be ready to install the new (please remember first step is diconnect the battery!)

the alternator on a 89 jetta isn't bad, but be careful because with this car it comes in threes, next is the starter, then probably the battery.as fas as the alternator, you must first release the bolt that runs through the bottom, save this, because you will need it for the new one. Next release the top bolt, in which holds it to the little crank doo dah, and now pull like hell...it seems to be just the perfect fit in between where that bottom bolt was connected, so it takes some time getting it off, and the new one back on.once you have the new one out, just go ahead and throw the new one on...the belt shouldn't interfere too much, give it the "gootentight" method, worked for me, as you put it back on. just make sure to leave it dangling while replacing the old one.

Take it to a mechanic...it's too much of a pain in the ass. Front assembly needs to be taken off. Engine has to be raised or lowerred (Preferably raised). Pay the money to get it taken care of so you don't bust up your own hands doing the work.

What the manuals don't tell you is to remove the trottle body for the 1.8l tubo. The hayes/Chilton and alldata.COM don't give you this information. They show how to remove it on a v6. Thirty percent of jetta's come with the 1.8l.

COME ON ALLDATA AND HAYES/chilton GET WITH THE PROGRAM AND DO SOME REAL RESEARCH.

A 1999 Volkswagen Jetta's alternator is located on the front of the engine. To remove it the mounting bolts, belt, and bracket must be removed. Once taken off the engine the alternator should be directly tested to see if it is indeed the problem.
