I just did it (have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT) , on the blade there are 4 slots in the middle, perpendicular to the rear window. One of them has a tab in it. And I just jabbed my key in the slot and lifted the blade of the peg. You can get replacements, I think they are 16" and they have to be quickconnect.
