How do you replace the Water pump and Alternator Belt on a 1994 Geo Prism?
You have to release the tension bolts, and the actual bolts that hold the units on, after this make sure you have slack to remove the belts paying attention to which one came out first because that will be the last one to go back on. I would recommend replacing all the belts, the power steering can be overlooked and will start to squeak.
best answer: don't, just replace the alternator. this is something that must be done on a press using a special jig to clamp the parts on. not something the regular garage mechanic has access to. the effort and expense to do this is equal or greater than replacement of the alternator. only reason to do it is if the part is no longer available.
If the alternator is driven by a drive belt, the answer is yes. You adjust the tension by loosing the bolts on the alternator mounting brackets and sliding the alternator until the proper tension, (around 1/4" deflection at mid point of the belt) is achieved. If however it has a Serpentine Belt driving the alternator, then there is no adjustment. Tension is held by the idler pulley. If it is loose then the belt is…
Can you replace a 1994 Geo Prism 1.6 automatic transmission with a 1994 1.6 Toyota Corolla automatic transmission?
Have you measured the voltage across the battery with the engine running? It should measure approximately 14v. If not you want to replace your alternator/voltage regulator. Check your shop manual to see if you can open the alternator and replace the brushes. After so many miles the brushes wear down, this is the most frequent cause of alternator failure. there is a fusable link in the line between the battery and the alternator i replaced…
Not that difficult - everything is on the top of the engine. Take the serpentine belt off first, disconnect the wires and attach them to the new alternator in order. Then take the bolts out (they are obvious) and change the alternator - put the belt back on - that's usually the hardest part and your done.
First, disconnect the battery cables, Second, you have to drain some or all the coolant so you can remove the upper radiator hose, Third, disconnect the alternator cables, Fourth, loosen the bolt attaching the alternator so you can loosen the alternator belt, Finally, remove the bolt and angle the alternator to remove it. You might need to hammer the alternator from underneath, sometimes they are really tight. 'Hope this helps.
