The year, engine size and type are critical to being able to accurately answer your question. If you are mechanically inclined, I would suggest you purchase a relatively inexpensive repair manual and follow the steps outlined. I've been working on my own vehicles for over 40 years and I still purchase a Chilton's repair manual or equivalent before I start working on a different vehicle that I bought. A step by step guide is invaluable.

In my experience burning out alternators on a Pontiac and an Oldsmobile, you can get about 100,000 miles out of it before expecting to replace the alternator.
It's built into the alternator, you will have to tear the alternator apart to replace it or do as most people do and buy a new alternator.
The alternator on a Pontiac Aztek is replaced by removing the engine accessories, loosening the serpentine belt, and removing the retaining bolts. The alternator can then be pulled from its retaining bracket and a new one installed.
