Pretty easy actually. The egr valve is that flyin' saucer lookin' thing on top of the engine next to the Upper Intake Manifold. You'll see it back near the firewall of the engine bay on the driver side. Should be two bolts holding it onto the UIM, and perhaps a larger nut on the underside, I'm not certain. It is very rare for the EGR valve to need replacement in these cars. Try searching for the Check Engine Light code on a contour web site & you should find plenty of info on how to fix your problem with minimal fuss. Typical causes for emissions related CELs are the DPFE sensor (easy fix), cleaning out the EGR passages behind the throttle body (easy fix), often both.
Remove the vacuum hose from the EGR valve. Pull the valve out of the air cleaner housing. Reverse the process to install the new valve.
The 2002 Mercury Mountaineer EGR valve can be found in the engine compartment, on the firewall. The EGR valve will be labeled as such.

The 1989 Mercury Sable 3.0 liter engine EGR valve is located on the firewall. The valve will be on the passenger side of the firewall.

You unscrew the bolts.
You replace the EGR valve.
Remove the wiring harness from your 2000 Dodge Stratus EGR valve. Remove the EGR valve retaining screws. Reverse the process to install the new EGR valve.
That's your EGR valve flow is insufficient. Replace the EGR valve.

Remove the egr valve, but be careful. The bolts can break easily if rusty. make sure the vacuum hose is clear of obstruction and try and spray some intake cleaner into the intake where you removed the egr valve, it may take some time with a small tool to work through the clog until the passage is clear
Replace if failed.
