How do you replace the fuel pump in a 1998 Buick Riviera?

Open trunk. Remove spare tire and trunk carpet. Remove fuel pump access panel (1/4" socket). Unplug fuel tank pressure/vacuum sensor plug (3-wire connector). Unplug fuel pump/fuel gauge sender plug (4-wire connector). Disconnect fuel feed and return hose quick-disconnects. With a hammer and a flat screwdriver, gently tap in a counter-clockwise direction w/ increasing force on the ring/collar holding the fuel pump/sender module in place. Once the ring/collar comes loose, the spring-loaded module assembly should pop up. Gently remove the whole assembly.
Inspect/replace 4-wire plug with (usually) included, larger gauge wire harness (melting/shorting has been known to happen at fuel pump (SCARY!!)). Replace giant rubber o-ring when re-installing new module. Do all of the above steps in reverse.
Enjoy driving down the road instead of pushing your car. :-)
