"First, insert the key into the ignition tumbler. Proceed by turning the key counter-clockwise until the key is in the "accessory" position. Using a paper clip or pick tool, depress lockout pin while turning the key counterclockwise approximately 1/8 of a turn. The tumbler should then release. Remove tumbler from ignition switch. Note the position of the tumbler as it is being removed from the ignition switch, making sure not to turn the key as it is being removed from the switch. Align the new key and tumbler in the same position. Be sure the flat edge at the end of the new tumbler matches the same position as the old tumbler. You will more than likely need to suppress the pin on the face of the tumbler as shown in video in order to match the same flat edge position. " - Copied with permission from tomsbroncoparts.com. Remove the ignition retaining ring. Pull the ignition barrel out. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the ignition barrel. Reverse the process to install the new ignition key tumbler.
I broke my key in the ignition and cant get it out. My only option I can see, is to replace to tumbler. How do I remove it?
The ignition switch is one unit and you replace the entire thing. Do not confuse the ignition switch with the key lock tumbler. They are two different things.
Remove the plastic 2 piece shroud around steering column so as to gain access to the housing the tumbler sits in. Find three Phillips screws to remove in holes in the lower piece. Turn the ignition key to the Run position. Insert a small tip screwdriver in the access hole on the bottom of the housing to push the spring-loaded tab which will free the tumbler so you can simply pull the tumbler out with the key. Installation is the reverse. Be sure tumbler with key inserted is set to the Run position. Depress spring-loaded tab, insert tumbler into housing hole with tab down. All the way in, turn key to the Lock (off position).
Replace the tumbler assembly, it is broken.
