Replacing rear ball joints on an 1989 Accord First remove rear upper control arm. Remove plastic cap in top of rear suspension knuckle, then remove cotter pin. Loosen castle nut on balljoint stud. Use a puller or separator tool to pop the balljoint stud loose from knuckle, then remove castle nut completely. Remove 2 bolts securing rear upper control arm assembly containing balljoint, to body of car. You now have 2 options for replacing the balljoint. 1. Remove snap ring retaining ball joint in arm then use an arbor press to press out old ball joint and press in new ball joint. The arm must be supported right at the ball joint or distortion of arm will occur. Find/borrow/fabricate suitable pieces of pipe or even large deep reach sockets. 2. Obtain new rear upper control arm assembly containing balljoint. Price them at the dealer (big bucks), auto parts store (about $70-$120) or junkyard. Installation is reverse of removal. Use grease on all fasteners. Don't forget the cotter pin. Drew
