Hey Carolyn==It isn't real hard but you need direction. Go to Auto zone or another parts store and get a manual on your car for about $18 and it should have pictures and everything. Good luck Joe

Starters on Saturn Sl, Sc are fun. They are tucked up behind the block under the intake. There might be a black plastic cover over it as well. You will have to reach up under the back of the block, around the exhaust. I can't remember if there are two bolts or four. Make sure you disconnect the battery first due to the live power wire on the end of it. There are two nuts on the end (one that holds the live power wire) and one that is a lot smaller. All starters from 91-99 should be the same size when buying them new. The older ones used to be bigger but they are now using the new updated starter.
starting position, there is only two ways the cap can go on, if it doesn't work one way turn 180 degrees. If you moved or installed the distributor it's a whole nuther ball game. In that case the vehicle could be severely out of time. I the distributer was not taken out, the cogs disjoined, then it could be simple. Lossen the bolt under the distributer housing, have some one turn the engine and yourself slowly turn the whole distributer one way, if it does not fire, turn slowly the other way until it fires. Done very carefully the timing can be set as good as a machine can set it.
The starter for your car is located under the intake manifold and can most easily accessed from the bottom of the car. So put the car up on jack stands or ramps if you have them and look to the left of the oil filter as you are looking up with you feet pointing towards the front of the car. There are (2) wires connected to the starter, one is from the battery and will spark if you do not disconnect the battery first. So disconnect the battery, the negative cable is usually enough, and take the (2) wires off the starter. Now for the fun part, the starter is held on by (2) bolts. One is at the bottom and you should be able to see it with a flash light, the other is at the top of the starter, and will require an extension and some patience to remove, but rest assured, once you get that bolt out there is nothing else holding the starter in but gunk, so wiggle it out and take it to your parts store to get another. The 1995 engine had (2) different starters available, one is French and says Valeo on it and is expensive, the other is not as expensive. I have a 1994 SC2 that the starter went out on, and I bought a used starter from a 1998 SC2 and it has been working better than the old one for the last 5 months, so use your own discretion on selecting a replacement, but know that there is no difference in the twin cam 1.9L engine block and transmission from 1990-end of production. I personally have (5) Saturns in the family, my 94 SC2, a 94 SL2, a 95 SC2, an 01 SL2 and an 05 Vue. I have changed the engines and transmissions out on (2) of them, both 94's and can tell you that both cars are using starters from newer model years. Reinstalling the new starter is the opposite of the removal process, remember that disconnecting the battery will clear the programming for your ECU, so if you car shifts funny for a couple of days, do not worry, the transmission and engine are just re-learning how to shift around your driving style from the factory defaults. Good luck.
The starter is located in the rear of the engine block. The starter is Held in by Two 13mm bolts, one you can see from underneith while your laying on the ground, the other is only available by feeling around the mounting surface towards the top of the starter assembly. the wireing is held on by a 13mm nut for the battery/alternator connection, and a 9mm or 10mm nut for the purple ignition wire.
Remove the positive cable from the battery, to reduce the risk of a shock. Remove the cables from the starter. Remove the retaining bolts from the starter. The starter will come off. Reverse the process to install the new starter.
Remove the positive cable from your 1998 Saturn battery. Remove the cables from the front of the starter. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new starter.
Remove the positive cable from your 1995 Saturn battery. Remove the cables from the starter. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new starter.
Remove 2 ea bolts, disconnect cable coming from battery and pull. Always disconnect positive terminal on battery before performing maintenance.
If it is because of the drive, it may need a flywheel also. If it keeps burning out the wiring, I would change brand of starters.
I just found the relay on my 1999 sc2.I have a standard tranny and I followed the wires from the clutch safety switch. My relay was up under the dash on the drivers side taped with electrical tape to the harness. Hard to see get agood flashlight. Probably at the top of starter- follow the + battery cable should connect to starter solenoid (relay)
You replace the valve seals on a 1996 Saturn SL1 by removing all of the hardware to get to the valves, unseating them, cleaning them, and sliding the new valve gaskets on. In order to do this you should consider getting a good Chiltons or other repair manual for your make, model, year, and engine.
The cam chain tension on a 1996 Saturn SL1 cannot be reset from outside of the motor. It will have to be accessed inside the motor. It is also a good idea to check and make sure it is not simply a broken timing guide.
crank sensor is bad
How can I replace the headlamp on a 2000 Saturn SL1
The starter on a 2001 Saturn SL1 is located on the driver's side of the engine. It is just to the left and in front of the alternator/generator.
2350lbs estimate
Remove the positive battery cable from your 2000 Saturn battery. Remove the cables from the front of the starter. Remove the three starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new starter.
The 95 Saturn SL1 does it too.
The relay is attached to the starter and is an integral part.
either the kick panel or on the starter itself. sometimes ther are 2 of them
lease gas cap on 2000 sl1
Check the wiring on the starter. Also check all grounds
The starter for a 1999 Saturn is on top of the transmission under the air filter box. Remove the filter box for easy access.
try looking for a wiring diagram
In the fuse box under the hood.
