It is located in the front of the engine towards the top. If you follow the radiator hose it will lead you to the thermostat. There are two bolts that hold it in place. You can remove the bolts fairly easily and replace the thermostat. It is important that you make sure that everything is clean when you reassemble everything.
i had a Dakota with the V8 .and if it is like the 97 dodge Dakota it will be on the housing from the top radiator hose

The thermostat on a 4.7L is located where the lower radiator hose hooks the engine. The thermostat is located under the housing where the lower radiator hose hooks to the block.
Where the lower hose goes on the engine, it is under that housing.

It is under the housing that the lower rad hose hooks to.
Drain the radiator. disconnect the top radiator hose from the engine. Remove the water inlet that the hose was hooked to. The thermostat is in the housing. Replace the gasket when replacing the thermostat.
On the 3.7L and 4.7L the thermostat is under the housing where the lower radiator hose hooks to the engine.
Follow the lower radiator hose to the engine, it is there.
There is no assembling it. If it is apart, replace it. If you mean how is it installed, the spring side goes towards the engine block.
