1. drain the coolant 2. remove the upper radiator hose -- runs from the top of the radiator to the connection right above the exhaust manifold. 3. remove the two nuts (one each side) that hold this upper connection to the engine head. This "connection" is a water outlet -- silver in color. 4. the thermostat sits inside this connection -- between it and the engine head.
replace it. when they go bad you can't fix them.

Loosen the alternator bracket, move it out of the way. The thermostat is at the end of the upper radiator hose where it curves into the engine

The starter relay switch is in the same location on both the 1996 and the 1997 Dodge Avenger. The starter relay switch can be found in the fuse box.
Drop the tank pull the sending unit and the pump is in the sending unit to swap u might have to replace the hole sending unit to be able to get the pump
