first let the engine cool, takeoff the serpentine belt, fan shroud and fan assembly off of the pulley, then unbolt the water pump, take it off clean off the old gasket. then do the reverse, put on the new water pump bolt it in place, put the fan on then the fan shroud the the serpentine belt.
If you go to autozone.com it will tell you there how to do it. 2.5L, 2.8L and 4.0L Engines See Figures 3, 4 and 5 Some vehicles use a serpentine drive belt and have a reverse rotating water pump coupled with a viscous fan drive assembly. The components are identified by the words REVERSE stamped on the cover of the viscous drive and on the inner side of the fan. The word REV is also cast into the body of the water pump. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system. Disconnect the hoses at the pump. Remove the drive belts. Remove the power steering pump bracket. Remove the fan and shroud. If equipped, remove the idler pulley to gain clearance for pump removal. Unbolt and remove the pump. Fig. 3: Remove the power steering pump and bracket, then move it aside Fig. 4: Disconnect the radiator hose from the water pump Fig. 5: Remove the bolts securing the pump, then remove it from the engine To install: Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly. Using a new gasket, install the pump and tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm). If removed, install the idler pulley. Reconnect the hoses at the pump and install accessory drive belt. Install the power steering pump bracket. Install the fan and shroud. Adjust the belt tension and fill the cooling system to the correct level. Operate the engine with the heater control valve in the HEAT position until the thermostat opens to purge air from the system. Check coolant level and fill as required.
For some reason I've had to replace a water pump on my '95 4.0 about every two years.. Here's a link on how to:.. It's not too difficult, the first time it took about 4 hours, now it's about a 1.5 hour job. http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/15/1d/85/0900823d80151d85.jsp
