How to replace a 2000 Kia Sephia H2O PmpI did this last night...

You need to remove the timing belt covers (they won't completely come off until you get the motor mounts out of the way), passenger side motor mounts, power steering pump (you can just unbolt it and swing it out of the way), all the accessory belts, the passenger side shroud that goes under the car, and the passenger front tire. You'll need the car in the air, so get it up on jack stands and get ready to get wet (if there's any water left in the car).

Once all of that is out of the way, loosen the tensioner on the timing belt pulley system (two small rollers under the timing cams...the one on the left is the tensioner) and with a 5mm Allen wrench, rotate the spring tensioner pulley to take the timing belt off. You will also need to remove the two roller pulleys (the tensioner and the matching one beside it) before you can remove the water pump. Once all of that is out of the way, remove the 5-6 12mm bolts and the one 10mm bolt from the water pump and pull it off.

Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace the gasket...it's just a good idea and it's not expensive. Our water pump failed because of the pulley bearing. The alternator belt was tensioned too tight which caused the bearing to fail, so watch your belt tension...

Good luck.

They dont have timing belts. There are timing chains on both the 2.2L OHV and the 2.4L DOHC engines.

Both the SOHC and DOHC engines have a belt that must be changed every 120,000 miles. Warning: The DOHC engine is an interference engine and as such if the belt breaks you will have severe internal engine damage.

i have a 2000 ford focus. it has a sohc it is blown and a dohc is so much cheaper what does it take to change the engine for a dual over head to work?

User Avatar

The water pump is timing belt driven. You should buy or borrow a service manual, as this is a very intensive repair.

User Avatar

It depends on local labor rates, but tends to be more than $1000.

The DOHC water pump is very different from the more traditional designs. It's more of a stand-alone unit mounted to the engine. Remove the unit and then take the front off which incorporates the impeller into that. It's more of a variation of the water pump on the 2.5 DOHC in the Contour/Mystique, than conventional pumps. (that's my point of reference anyways). The Taurus Car Club site has a couple of extensive, and photo-heavy threads on DOHC water pumps. I've linked both below. Please come back to this question and add-in your own procedure write-up, or tips & tricks that will help future DOHC water pump changers.
