Addition: 1 Remove Fan shroud and fan. The 1992 Cherokee does not have a shroud (at least mine doesnt) and the fan is easy to remove. 2. To loosen the belt, the easiest way is to remove the air filter box. a. open air filter box and remove filter b. remove bolt(s) at the bottom of the filter box c. remove all hoses attached to the filter box d. carefully wiggle air filter box loose, and remove e. loosen the 2 pivot bolts on the Power Steering pump (one is in front, one in back) f. loosen the tensioner bold under the power steering pump (access easier if you remove the air filter box. g. push down on the power steering pump so it slides a bit and relieves tension on the belt h. remove belt. NOTE: make sure you have/make a routing diagram so you know how to put it back again. 3. Remove the water pump 4. Remove the water pump gasket and discard 5. Clean the gasket surface 6. apply a THIN film of Silicon gasket sealer to both sides of the new gasket 7. put the new gasket on 8. install new water pump 9. torque bolts according to factory spec (I just tighten them by feel, but I'm sure it's not reccomended) 10. Put everything back the way you found it. Note: if you are going to do this water pump and rip half your engine compartment out anyways, you might as well do the timing chain if your car has over 100k miles on it. The Steps are the same, except after you take off the water pump, take off the timing chain cover and replace the timing chain. Make sure you mark the timing gears so you can put them back together properly. Not totally sure about the '93, but on the '96 you have to do the following 1. Remove Fan Shroud and Fan. Fan comes off with 4 bolts. 2. Loosen Belt and remove. 3. Remove 6 bolts in the water pump *fan was actually attached to the water pump. that's basically all there is to it.

i have a 98 with the 4.0L. First you have to undo the nuts for the fan shroud next take off the four nuts that hold your fan to the pulley on the water pump. Pull fan and shroud out(you will have to reuse the bolts left on the water pump pulley remove carefully with pliers and install in new pump). Unclamp the lower radiator hose from the water pump. Next take out the two bolts that attach to the metal support then the four attaching the water pump to the engine(you may have to move the power steering pump if so its only 4 bolts 2 on top 1 on bottom and follow the bottom support to find the 4th bolt). Remove any excess gasket that may have been left behind and also unscrew hose to pump and next install new pump

Just did it this weekend. Auto Zone has pretty good basic online instructions/diagrams. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the radiator (I didn't personally but most of the liquid was already spilt out or burned off.) Remove the power steering pump bracket on the front driver's side of the vehicle. There are two bolts in the back and a couple on the bottom that are hard to see (in addition to the obvious ones) that need to be removed to get the pump/bracket off. Also, there is one behind the steering pump, in the middle of the bracket that holds the bracket on and that one needs to be removed too. You may need to disconnect one or two radiator hoses if they are in your way. You'll need to remove the serpentine belt from the pump. Remove the extra fan (the one on the driver's side by the steering pump, NOT the main fan. Now you should be able to access the bottom radiator hose which you need to disconnect. Remove the four bolts that connect the pulley to the pump, I had a heck of a time with this one since the pulley moves and the bolts were in there way tight. It took lots of WD-40 and patience. You can try holding one bolt with a vice grip while turning a second with your ratchet. Personally, I had to push a screwdriver down into it to keep it from turning since the two wrench thing didn't work for me. (It might be easier to remove the pulley bolts with the belt still on if you can get to them that way- more resistance) Once the pulley is off you can remove the remaining water pump screws and then disconnect the metal hose screwed into the top of the pump. Scrape off any gasket residue, add a new gasket and reconnect everything in reverse order.

It was a real pain in the arse, but i finally got my water pump done on a 8 cyl 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee {Laredo I think}

I had to take the fan off, which was actually the hardest part and shouldn't be, but the way these things were designed, you'd think a retarded person did it. Anyways..

I had to use a special pair of vise grips and a breaker bar just to get the fan off. Tried using a strap wrench, no good.. it slips. They recommend a spanner wrench, but i already had one.. the trick is getting the water pump pulley to stay in place while loosening the large nut that holds the fan on. Honestly, i could have designed something better while sitting on the toilet! I loosened some of the nuts on the pulley just enough to keep the strange looking vise grips on them, and used a large breaker bar to keep the fan blades in place while turning the large nut.

Once the fan nightmare was finally over {for now} it was time for the fun task of pulling the bad water pump. There is extra hoses {3 attached to it, compared to the 1 that a blazer has} that gave me some trouble, but with the right tools and lots of alcohol, the job is possible. Vise grips of many shapes and sizes are your friends.

The water pump has about 8 bolts keeping it in place, some are different lengths.. MAKE SURE you put them back the right way, or you will have leaks and will have to start over.

Clean the old gasket off really well, but be careful as all this stuff is aluminum and can easily be damaged. You could try the old gasket remover spray stuff, but it didn't really work well for me.

use a blue RTV to keep the new gasket in place while putting on the new pump. This was very challenging with all the extra hoses and such, so an extra set of hands is very helpful, even if they know nothing about it.

The Haynes manual will tell you how to tighten the bolts on other models, but not mine. I just went in a pattern similar to putting lugs on a tire, tightening each bolt little by little until they were all tight and flat.

Getting the fan back on was just reverse getting it off. The new water pump is set up differently too, so now there is even less to keep the pulley in place when removing the fan. I'm hoping to get rid of this p.o.s. before i have to take it off again!

This is a major job when performing it on a Jeep Grand Cherokee, looking at about 5-6 hours of constant work. On a Chevy Blazer S-10, i can change a water pump in less than an hour. Just goes to show, Jeep should have fired their design guys years ago.

Why is fan running all the time on 2003 Jeep Cherokee Laredo?

Maybe because there's no such car? The last year for the Cherokee was 2001. I had the same problem on my 2003 jeep grand cherokee. One reason it will stay on is after you wash it or a good amount of water gets in the engine. If it is below freezing the water freezes in the radiator causing the fan to continuously run

What water temperature should a 97 jeep grand Cherokee limited v8 run at?

Radiator coolant pouring out from behind radiator more on passenger side car overheating what can cause this on a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Engine Coolant is probably coming out of a small hole on the bottom of your water pump. This usually means your seals are gone in the pump and that the pump should be replaced. This happened to my '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee on I-40 near Knoxville about 3 years ago. NEW ADDITION: I am having the same problem with my 94 grand Cherokee today, we replaced the water pump and the problem still persists, there may be a hole in the radiator like mine.. just replace the radiator.. that's what im doing
