I just had a water pump installed in my Capri and while they're doing that, make sure they put a new timing belt in, because if you have a 91 Turbo w/ ac, it's a 4.5 hour job because the water pump is under the engine.

Jack the car up, and support with jack stands, or if you have ramps. First, drain the rad from the hose to the water pump. Remove the hose from the metal pipe that goes to water pump. Remove the metal pipe that goes into the water pump, 1 nut, and pull it out of the water pump. There is just a rubber "o" ring inside for a gasket. You might have to wiggle the pipe around to get it out. Slack the screw that give tension to the belt, remove the belt. Now, the pump is clear and ready to take out. You need a good rachet set. Remove the 2 bolts from underneath, the 3rd is best to remove from on top. If you buy a jobber pump, you get only half of the pump. You have to un bolt the pieces and with the new gasket supplied, bolt the new water pump to the casing. Make sure all surfaces are very clean. You also get a new " o " ring gasket for the pipe seal. I use silicone around the "o" ring seal also. The pipe just slips in and then you just bolt it. That's it. Replace the rest of the parts in reverse order.

The actual water pump that will fit this vehicle will cost approximately $20. One brand that you may like is the Dura International.

1990 mercury topaz engine grinds when driving?

Might just be the bearings in the front wheels. Check that. Also, a smart thing to check will be the water pump, if the pump is bad, makes it sound like the front main bearings in the engine are bad. And, hopefully there is nothing wrong with the engine. Good luck.

How much would the cost be to replace the belt on the water pump for a 1989 mercury topaz?

The belt on the water pump should be less than $ 20.00. A garage should charge a little less than an hours labor. With the car on a hoist, takes about 30 minutes to do the job.

The water pump is behind and above the crank pulley in the center of the front of the engine. It requires extensive disassembly to replace, the crank pulley and timing cover must be removed..
