The thermostat in the 1993 Ford Escort is located where the upper radiator hose meets the engine in a small housing that coolant flows through when the thermostat opens. A faulty thermostat stuck in the closed position fails to open when the engine gets hot, preventing the coolant from circulating between the engine and the radiator and leading to engine overheating and possible damage. A thermostat stuck in the open position fails to close when the engine cools, meaning that the engine takes too long to reach operating temperature, especially in winter.

o 1
Park the Ford Escort on a flat and level surface. Ensure the parking brake is set. If the car has a manual transmission, place it in first gear to ensure it does not roll.
o 2
Pull the hood release latch under the steering wheel to release the hood and provide access to the engine compartment. Open the hood.
o 3
Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine. The hose is mounted to the thermostat housing.
o 4
Unscrew the hose clamp with a flat tip screwdriver. The hose clamp has a screw that tightens the clamp to secure it on the thermostat housing inlet pipe. Slide the hose off the inlet pipe.
o 5
Unscrew the two bolts holding the thermostat housing together with a socket wrench. Use a 7/16-inch socket for the bolts. Separate the housing once the bolts are removed.
o 6
Pull the thermostat out of the assembly. Replace with the new thermostat. Ensure the spring end is inserted in first.
o
o 7
Scrape the mating surfaces with a razor scraper to remove the black gasket material. Ensure all the black is removed from the surfaces to prevent leakage in the future.
o 8
Place the new gasket on the housing assembly. Ensure the bolt holes match up to the bolt holes on the housing.
o 9
Place the top portion over the thermostat housing and ensure the bolt holes match up. Insert and tighten the two bolts with a socket wrench to create a seal to prevent future leaking of coolant.
o 10
Slide the hose over the inlet pipe. Tighten the hose clamp over the inlet pipe and hose with a flat tip screwdriver.
o 11
Twist the radiator cap counterclockwise and pull the cap away from the radiator. Fill the radiator with pre-mixed coolant.
o 12
Start the car and allow it to idle until the car is warm. Ensure the radiator cap is off the radiator. Once the car is warm, the coolant level will drop. Continue filling until the radiator is full. The level will be visible from the opening.
o 13
Tighten the radiator cap on the radiator. Close the hood and turn off the car.

NO. An 86 Escort is a 1st generation Escort and a 93 Escort is a 2nd generation.
there is no gasket on the exhaust manifold. i have a 93 escort lx wagon and i have a leak somewhere and i looked at the exhaust diagram at my local napa and it doesnt show a gasket. * Not sure which diagram you were looking at but there is DEFINITELY a gasket... Look up exhaust manifold on any popular car site and you will clearly see one.
Just squeeze the 2 prongs together to take the tension off.
