There are many ways to do this.
1.Beat a castle or tower you have not beaten before
2.Beat the game
3.Spend 5 Star Coins at a sign
4.Beaten the game already? Pause on the level selection screen(press start) and select"save". This will only appear AFTER you beat the game.

∙ 8y agoThere are blocks with the the letter "S" printed on them. They are seen throughout the game. Go under them and hit the "A" button on your controller and Mario will jump, hitting the block. You will be asked if you want to save your progress. Select "Yes" and the game will save your progress.

∙ 13y agoIn every Paper Mario game there is a block that has a "S" on it, jump and hit it and it will ask you to save, and if you quit or die you will start back at that save point.
