There is no one universal European language. Although most of Western Europe shared Latin under the Roman Empire, Latin began to decline in daily usage after the death of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD.

During the Dark Ages, or the time in which Germanic barbarians took to occupying lands of the deceased Roman Empire, languages deriving from Latin began to emerge as the mass migration of peoples began to merge different dialects into that of which Western and Central Europeans now use daily.

By the time of 1000 AD, Latin had all but been supplanted by French, German, and Italian, with English following William the Conqueror's invasion of Anglo-Saxon England in 1066.
