Why do they say a team is 10 games over 500 if their record is 27 losses and 37 wins when 500 would be 32 wins and losses so wouldn't they really would be 5 games over?

The team with a 37-27 record is 10 games over .500 and not 5 games because the team would need to lose 10 straight games to drop to .500 (37-37). .500 is based on the number of games a team has won and lost and not a number based on the mid-range of total games played. Let's say the team wins their next game. With a record of 38-27, they would be 11 games over .500. But if .500 were based on the mid-range, .500 would be 32 1/2 wins and 32 1/2 losses. Obviously, a team can't win 1/2 of a game or lose 1/2 of a game.
