I believe that has the DIS, distributerless ignition system, if so there is no timing adjustment. The timing is controlled by the ignition module, crankshaft sensor and the ECM (engine computer).

Try having some run a test using and OSB tester. Sometimes if the sensor is going bad it will show.

It depends on what engine you have. They are all on the front of the engine some are under the timing cover. Get a manual on your car from the parts store.

I do not believe your 87 olds cutlass ciera (V-6 or 4) has a timing belt!!!It has gears instead. They usually outlast the life time of the auto.

User Avatar

Timing chains are designed to last the life of the engine. If one was to break the engine would cease to run. A compression test would read "0".

User Avatar

Unless you have a 4 cylinder engine, and that's a maybe, there is no timing belt on that car. It uses a chain drive that will wear with age. The best way to tell is with a labscope that monitors the Crankshaft Sensor signal, and the Camshaft Sensor signal to see if they are in time and steady.

If a timing chain broke, the engine wouldn't run and a compression test would read "0".

It does not have a timing belt. It has a timing chain. The chain will normally last until the engine needs an overhaul. Not a normal maintenance item. It does not have a timing belt. If it is the 3.4L Twin DOHC version, it is a monstor job. This motor has timing belt and timing chain. The entire front cover of the engine has to come off to replace both.

Symptoms of a worn timing chain are some or all of these:Rough idle.Backfiring, bucking, or sputtering.A rattling noise from the chain.Engine may not start.

User Avatar

If it broke it will not start. Remove the distributor cap, and turn the engine over. If the rotor does not turn, the chain/belt is broke.

there is no timing belt. It is a timing chain that requires no maintenance.
