Take the spark plug out of the #1 cylinder. Have someone stick a finger over the hole (but not into it, naturally). Bump the starter until a burst of air pushes their finger out. That's the point where the #1 cylinder is at Top Dead Center. Replace the spark plug and spark plug wire. Unbolt the distributor to loosen it. Hook up the timing light.. the red cable to the battery positive, the ground to either the battery negative or a good ground point, and the last cable goes on the wire to the #1 spark plug. Start the vehicle, and aim the timing light at the timing marks. Rotate the distributor to advance or retard the ignition timing until it's right.
