Often times computer speakers are purchased as a back-up resourse in the event that the primary speakers fail. External speakers are often louder than built-in speakers and also portable. External speakers may also be plugged in to other electronic devices.
Yes it's simple just connect them to your TV
It is possible to replace your TV speakers. However, you will probably end up with better sound quality if you disconnect the internal speakers and add an external or surround sound system.
For a 5 channel set up, I would recommend putting two speakers in the back and two speakers in the front. Then place the subwoofer anywhere in the room.
Many of them can.You have to look on the back for speaker jacks.

6.5" speakers. The 8 speakers, as someone else quoted, are two sets of 6.5" in front, and a set in the back, plus tweeters up front. Not sure if the speakers are ran off a factory crossover, or how they have it hooked up. I'll rip into mine tomorrow, but those are the speakers that should be there. The GT is the 6-speaker setup.
Some of the better TVs have external speaker connectors on the back, most do not. If the TV has audio output connectors you can connect a stereo audio amplifier and speakers to these. If this works, go into the audio menu and turn off the TVs internal speakers.
you are going to need an amplifier that can support 7.1 sound the apmlifier will give you directing on setting it up.
You did turn the "mute" off right? Via the Sound keys.System Preferences/ Sound and see if the internal speaker is selected if you don't have external speakers connected. If you have external speakers or plug in a head set you have to chose them in the same place, it may show up under "Line Out" more then likely.SoundSource is an application that puts a drop down menu in the upper Apple menu bar to make it quicker to switch back and forth, there are others out there also.
Hook your speakers up to the amp.
