How can you teach your dog not to jump the fence?

I've been Wrestling with this problem for several years now! I have a Shar-Pei that climbed the fence EVERY time he was let outside. We live in the country and he loves to chase the deer, racoons, squirrels, and get in the creek for a swim. He always comes back, but keeping him inside the yard has been a challenge (I don't want him hit by a car, shot by someone, etc.). I've tried everything, but the one thing that has worked so far is putting a 3-foot extension of Fencing on top of the existing chain link. I used flimsy fencing on top so when he gets to that point (where the chain link ends and the flimsy fencing begins), the flimsy fencing simply falls back on top of him and he can't get over it! Don't leave him outside alone! Honestly, it's simple. If he's bored and lonely he's going to look for something to do, and that may include leaving your yard. So go outside with him. Toss a ball around for a while, or play a game of "people chasing" (don't chase him, but it's fun to let him chase you, and see if you can Dodge him before he gets there). If he's outside to potty, just stand by the door and wait for him to finish, and then bring him back inside to play a game of hide and seek. I'm guessing this isn't what you were looking for, but it's the best solution for your dog. Leaving him outside alone isn't fair. He's a pack animal, and if he's cut off from his pack (YOU, his family) he will do what he feels he has to - and you can't fault him for that. try getting a shock coller(you can put different modes on it too) if the dog even gets near it it will put a shock on it so it won't go near the fence. Make the fence higher if possible! -This is from Wolfheart11 Dog-ma is right, making the fence higher will help... you get also get the invisible fence( I never used it but my friend said her dog stopped). When the dog trys to jump over the fence, it will give him a small shock! It won't hurt, but it will stop him from jumping over the fence. Every time he trys to jump, shock. All you have to do is put on the special collar and ... I think I said what was going to happen alot!!! Hope this helps! :)

There are also available anti jumping harnesses at the larger pet shops or through the doggy catalogs. They restrict your dog from jumping and you can safely leave them on your dog. I would recommend this over an electric collar. With that you would have to stand there all day long to zap your dog when he decides to jump the fence. That would be very inconvenient for you

Try to determine if the dog is trying to get away from something or go to something and then take action based on why it is happening. If going away from something, then eliminate that problem (is it too hot, too cold, too sunny, too dark and wet, is it afraid of another animal, etc.). If it is climbing to go to something, then provide that so it doesn't have to climb out to get it (does it need a drink or food, for instance).

It might be trying to get to another dog to mate or fight. If it has been successful at that in the past, it will be driven to try again since the reproductive and territorial instincts in dogs are very strong. In those cases, you may need to install a taller fence or different type of fence that is not as easy for it to climb, because it is very difficult to impossible to train to over-ride instinct and reproductive needs. Unless you are going to breed the dog in a carefully planned and knowledgeable way, you would want to also have the dog neutered. This can control the overpowering drives to mate, fight, and roam.

Some dogs want to hunt and chase (again instinct) and that will likely also need to be controlled by the fence itself, especially if there is wildlife that the dog is wanting to chase outside the fence. Don't leave the dog house or other structure next to the fence so the dog can get on it and then get out of the fence easier.

Sometimes it is just that the dog is lonesome or bored and needs something stimulating to do. Be sure it gets plenty of exercise and has lots to play with and to do so it doesn't just climb the fence to have something to do. Some breeds are more prone to this than others, often the smarter the dog, the more it gets bored. There are toys available that are specifically for keeping smart and bored dogs busy, ask at a pet supply store.

As far as training to control this, you first need to have your dog trained in basic obedience. Find classes and go to them with your dog. Then once the dog knows to respond to your commands and trust you (both things that you and your dog are trained how to do at obedience classes), then you can try to train the dog to no longer do this by command. As you will find out in the training classes, almost robotic consistency and immediate response to the unwanted behavior is critical for success. You will need to plan to be there much of the time it is out in the fenced area at first to watch the dog closely and catch them doing what you don't want done so you can correct them.

Correction and training may solve the problem, but you will still have to consider the other points above. Training must be very good to make any effect on instinctual behavior, so unless you are willing to learn how to do that correctly with training classes, then you might as well just put in a taller fence that is not as easily climbed to keep your dog safe.

know don't shoot the dog just build a bigger fence then Ur dog wont be able to jump it because it will be to high for the dog to jump it and if the dog keeps on going under the fence just put the fence more into the ground

try asking your neighbours or somebody whose good with dogs. Or try luring it and encouraging it not to do it.
