You can care for a Christmas cactus by putting it in indirect sunlight, keep it humid, check the moisture in the soil for the need to water and use fertilizer. Giving the plant the proper light will allow it to bloom at just the right time for the holiday.

It depends on the temperature and the amount of humidity in the air. You should test the soil with your fingertip: When it is still a bit humid, don't water the plant. When the soil is really dry, give it water, but take care, that the soil is not drenched.

The Christmas cactus [Schlumbergera and Zygocactus spp] needs to be grown in warm light to half shade. It prefers to be outdoors. But it generally needs to be taken inside in September, for overwintering. Before then, make sure not to let the soil dry out. In fact, the Christmas cactus is native to the Brazilian rain forest. So the soil always needs to be kept slightly moist.

Until the beginning of August, fertilize and water every 14 days. The fertilizer needs to be low in nitrogen, and high on phosphorus and potash. With the beginning of August, leaves ripen and buds develop. It's the month to stop fertilizing.

Make sure that the plant is in an environment in which temperatures don't drop below 50-57 degrees F/10-14 degrees C at night, or 64 degrees F/18 degrees C during the day.

It should be kept in a well-lit area with a source of humidity. You should moderately water it and add fertilizer to encourage growth
