You must first have all the supplies for them, such as the basics of a:

cage

water bottle

food dish

FOOD

bedding

running wheel

P.S. have either a wire mesh or solid wheel, because plain wire wheels or lined wheels will catch their feet/tail and injure the little guys!

For the gerbils happiness:

toilet paper tubes (to chew)

untreated wood sticks (to chew)

vitamin water drops (drop in water bottles to make their little bodies strong)

house (for shelter)

CritterTrail tubes (attach to have them crawl up though)

(if possible) another gerbil to keep company and love

DO NOT BUY ANOTHER GERBIL AT SEPARATE DAYS OR THEY WILL FIGHT TO THE DEATH!

Have a happy gerbil!

Raising baby gerbils takes work, knowledge, and patience. I myself raise gerbils, so I know this firsthand. This will be a very long answer. First of all, when the babies are being born, the best thing to do is leave the mother alone. She needs privacy. Check on her every 20 minutes or so. If she squeaks, this is normal. If she is in labor for a very long time, or it looks like the babies are stuck, immediately take her to the emergency vet to have them try to massage the babies out. It usually turns out fine. Once all of the babies are born, she will eat her own placenta and clean up her mess. Let her do this, it is natural instinct. The parents are very good to their children and usually do everything for you. They pick up and move the babies, nurse them, and clean them up. Some of the babies die (usually around 2 of them). This is just natural selection, and there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it. If all the babies die, it might be time to stop breeding your gerbils, as the female has grown too old. If and when you have stillborns or dead babies, take them out with a plastic cup, and bury them somewhere and put rocks over it to prevent coyotes from eating them. Through everything, you must remember something; unless you have known the parents for a long time and they are used to you, NEVER, and I mean NEVER, touch the babies until their eyes open. If you don't, your scent will alert the parents of a 'security breach' in the clan and they will kill and eat the babies. The woman I got mine from told my mother and I that she has seen it happen and it is very sad to watch. Their eyes open around day 17-21. After about 6 weeks, they can be separated from the mother. That's about it! If you would like more information, you can shoot me a message on my message board here on wikianswers, or you can check out my gerbil blog. The address is on my bio page.

You should always buy gerbil in twos because they are very sociable animals and love company! You should also have a large cage because they are very springey animals! A gerbilarium is the best because it is exactly like their natural habitat and they can burrow. It is also very good for the environment because you only havce to clean it every 3-4 months, unlike a sawdust cage that you have to clean every week. They will also need a water bowl or water bottle. Personally I think that the bottles are best becasue they can sometimes will their water bowl up with sand and sawdust so they cant drink it. They also need gerbil food, and NOT HAMSTER FOOD!!! I thought hamster and gerbil food was the same but its not. It is for a balanced hamster diet and is too fatty for a gerbil. One of my gerbils called Robin is on a diet after getting far too over weight from eating it. You should also get lots of toy because gwerbils love to play! Peices of wood from your garden make great, natural toys (but make sure they are clean and not treated with anything that could be poisonous!). You should also give them kitchen role tubes (not toilet rold tubes!) because they are also fun, but make sure you are not giving them anything with ink on it because that is highly poisonous!

you can take care of gerbils by giving them a spacious cage, and make sure that you buy 2 or more gerbils or the gerbil will be lonely. you put sawdust on the bottom of the cage, just enough so they can dig around in it. if you give them toys to play with it helps them exercise and if you give them cardboard they nibble it, and it helps to keep their teeth from becoming too long. you give them a water bottle, and refill their water every 2 days, so the water isn't dirty, and give them gerbil food in bowls, and make sure that they get fresh food every 4 days, or if the food is running low put more in. put treats into their cage, so they have a varied rage of food, and give them fresh vegetables. for their bed give them fluffy bedding so they can sleep on something nice instead of something hard. also give them a gnawing block, so when they gnaw on it it keeps their teeth size down. also you have to play with them to keep them healthy or they will become overweight and obese if u keep it like that for too long. and the last thing would be to take care of them by using all the information above and putting your heart and soul into keeping these animals healthy and alive.

Gerbil pups are generally given everything they need from their parents--both of them! Believe it or not, gerbils are wonderful parents! If the mother does not seem to be tending to the babies as often as you think she should, cover one half of the tank with a towel and shine a light on one corner of the cage for the babies (make sure not to put it too close so it does not get too warm). If the babies are still less than a few days old, you can look at their stomach and see an off-white spot beneath the skin that looks like a bean; these are called milk beans, and are actually the milk in their tummies. As long as these milk beans are there, mom is feeding them fine. If the gerbil pups do not have these beans for a few hours, you may have to buy kitten replacement milk and feed the pups through an eyedropper. If you can help it, try leaving the parenting to mom and dad. :]

Hope this helps!

When you first get your Gerbils Male or Female...

You slowly put your hand into the cage to let them smell your scent..

When you feel like you have done it enough time slowly pick them up from there stomach and keep them close to you

Your gerbil/gerbils might bite you first time but they are very friendly after a while!

Why would your gerbil get fat over night?

Either your gerbil is pregnant, or they have eaten too many sunflower seeds in one sitting. Try removing sunflower seeds from their diet. If they are still fat after one week, then your gerbil is probably expecting. For info on how to take care of baby gerbils, ask on this site 'How do you take care of baby gerbils?'.
