you get a math score, a critical reading score, and a writing score. each section is out of 800 points. for the class of 2008 and possibly the class of 2009, colleges are only looking at the math and critical reading...writing is not a factor yet. to calculate overall score (the one that the college will look at...the one out of 1600 points) add your scores from math and critical reading together. say if you got a 500 on math and a 560 on reading, you would add those together and get a 1060/1600. if you want the new score (incorporating writing, so out of 2400), add the scores from math, reading, and writing together.

After you take the SAT, your official score report will be provided to you and your high school, if you included the school code, about five weeks after the test via mail. Students who register online and wish to receive a paper score report by mail in addition to the online score report must request it when they register. Students who register by mail and who do not have active College Board online accounts will continue to receive paper score reports.

All of this information is available on collegeboard.com.

Your SAT score is out of 2400. Each section is scored out of 800 points.

SAT Essays are graded by two essay-graders on a scale from 1 to 6. The two scores are added together to give you your essays core. The essay score is out of 12 and is factored into your writing score.

For the math and verbal sections, 1 point is added for every correct question and 1/4 point is subtracted for every incorrect multiple choice question. No points are taken for unanswered questions or non-multiple choice questions. In the essay section, 1 point is added for every correct answer and the deductions are 1/4 for 5-choice, 1/3 for 4-choice and 1/2 for 3-choice questions answered incorrectly.

Your total SAT score is the combination of all three sections combined-critical reading, writing, and math. The new SAT test in spring of 2016 is a bit different from that.
