Determining SexMale and female ducks, and most birds in general, have very different coloration. The pictures in a good bird book will show you these differences. Typically the male bird has brighter plummage then the female, one belief is this is to make the nest less obvious to preditors during the nesting season.

The male will also have a curling tail if it is a male.

The most obvious way to tell the difference between a male and female duck is the fact that the females are usually drab in color. The males have color(red, yellow, white, orange).
Another way to tell, once the ducks are fully grown, is by the tail feathers. A drake (or male) has between 1 and 3 curly feathers on his tail, called 'drake feathers'. The female is lacking in this feather.

When ducks have reached the point where they have feathers, but not old enough that the male has gotten his colored feathers, one can tell the males from females because the female has a very loud quack and the males almost have a peep.

Don't know if this the the age duckling you are asking about.

I have a Mallard, and a White Duck. There are many different species, but the only one i am sure of how to tell is the Mallard. When it is grown, if it is mostly brown with little other colors such as black or white, it is a female. If it is brown with colors such as blue or gree everywhere, and a green head it is a male.

There is no way to tell if a duckling is male or female when they are young, when they get to about 4-6 weeks old you will be able to pick up on it by their sound, if they are deep voiced they are male, squeaky and high pitched is female :)

By the color and size of them. The male usually has prettier colored feathers and are bigger, females are just plain colors and are smaller.. Most bird species work that way.
