Depends on the type of turtle, i have had box turtles for years and the way you tell those is the males have longer toenails and have red eyes, and the females have brown eyes, I belive in most species (if not all) the male is larger than the female.

How do you tell a baby girl from a baby boy snapping turtle?

The difference between a female snapping turtle and a male snapping turtle is the difference in their tales. Each snapping turtle has a small cirlce looking shape on theie tale. If it is a female snapping turtle, it's circle will be closer to the shell (or the butt) an if it is a male snapping turtle, the circle will not neccesarily be at the end of the tail, but it is certainly not near the shell (or butt). With most snapping turtles, it should be obvious, but with some, it is hard to tell, especially if their newborns (a week old or younger).

How to determine if a turtle is a boy or a girl?

There are some tell tale signs for male turtles...longer tails, longer claws on the front legs and an upwardly curving Plastron (the part of the shell on the underside of the turtle). These are all characteristics that help the male "cling" to the female during mating. There are a number of things you can check, but most require comparing a male to a female and then you can see which is which. The one way that doesn't require that is to look at the bony plate covering the belly, which is called the plastron. On females, the plastron curves outwards (it's convex). On males, the plastron is curved inwards (it's concave). If you turn over a turtle, be careful and do that slowly, or you can injure them.
