Usually you can just tell by looking for marks on the fascia and small settings changes and new custom profiles. Also, look for any remaining files on the phone such as undeleted pictures or SMS text messages. Another thing to do is to check that all the default settings are present (these can be matched with another new phone), and that the default security codes are at default values. Granted, these can be changed, but it does not harm to check. Honestly in a professionally refurbished phone there is usually nothing wrong with it and it will be as NEW, but legally they cant label it as new.

Refurbished cell phones work just as well as brand new ones, and they can be purchased as a lower price. However, there may be some cosmetic differences which don't affect usability. However, refurbished phones typically have a lower warranty period.

A refurbished smartphone is a smartphone that has been returned to the original manufacturer. This model has then been tested for problems and restored to proper working, factory-standard condition. When you are buying it from a trusted retailer then you are given a warranty also. so basically you are not going to get any problem in using a refurbished phone. Refurbished phones are used but dint have any performance-related issues so you can assume them to be as good as a new one.

A refurbished phone can be a pre-owned handset that has been sent back to the manufacturer or the reseller for some minor flaws and setting them up to match the manufacturer-defined usage standards. A new phone is that directly comes from a manufacturer or company boxed packed at a much higher price than a refurbished phone.
