Male crabs have a triangular shape at the underside of the body while the female has no triangular shape but a round circle on the underside if its body. Males also tend to have larger claws than females.

∙ 12y agoThere are distinct shapes for each the male and female dungeness crab on the underside (abdominal) of the body and it takes up about half of the underside. The legs are the same size in the male and female Blue Crab. Female Blue Crabs have "painted fingernails" or red-tipped claws while the male has blue claws.
Another way to tell the difference between the male and female Blue Crabs is by the apron on the underside of the crab.
- Males have aprons shaped like the Washington Monument and they are known as a "Jimmy".
- Immature females have an apron shaped like an inverted triangle and are known as a "Sally" or a "She-Crab". (Personal Note: please, never harvest immature female crabs so they can continue to reproduce.
- Mature females have an apron shaped like the White House and are known as "Sooks".
(Personal Note: Please don't take any female crabs in harvest. Sooks can hold on to the male sperm for a long time before fertilizing her eggs and spawning. They sometimes travel from brackish water to higher salinity before spawning. Thanks!)
