First check to see if the filter is dirty. After you check it leave it out. You can either use the heat mode to thaw it out or just the fan. If you have a heatpump, just switch to the heat mode and raise the thermostat. If you have a furnace you can switch to heat mode, but the furnace may cut out due to all the water that will drip onto the burners. It would be safer to use the fan only in this instance. You should have plenty of towels around the base of the indoor unit as you will get plenty of water runoff. If you have a floor drain try to make a path to the drain. Once the coil is thawed out, return to the cool mode and drop the temp. If your filter was dirty, change it. If the filter was not dirty you could be low on refrigerant. If this is the case, your system will freeze up again, it is just a matter of time.
It depends on the temperature.
Technicaly yes, but all you have to do is turn the unit off for about an hour and let it thaw. It will work properly again after that.
It could cause the evaporator coil to freeze up if not enough air is blowing over it. If that happends just shut it off and let thaw.
You have to thaw it out.
