If your puppy is sleeping in a crate (recommended) it will make the training easier. Take the pup to the box after he eats, wakes up, and anytime you see him circling. If he does make a mistake and soil on the floor, clean it up right away. You can put some of the soiled paper in the box, as the puppy will go in the same spot once he smells the scent.

well Chihuahuas can be stubborn about housetraining of any kind. just be consistent -- if u tell ur dog go inside, don't expect it to go outside or not to go other places in the house at first. if you use newspapers NEVER leave newspapers lying around because the dog assumes it is the same

Chihuahuas are VERY smart (don't let anyone tell you any different, these little devils are always plotting something). This means they are NOT easy to train. Stick with it though, just be persistent and consistant. Do not get angry, do not loose your temper. Reward like crazy when the gets things right. Chihuahuas can be stubborn yes, I'll give you that, But that does not mean that they will be hard to train... it just means that you have to train them on their terms... that you have to figure out what tricks of the trade work with them { it really all depends on the personality of the individual dog.} I have owned 2 of them so far in my lifetime. I have also owned or currently own 1 Lab, 1 Sheperd mix, 1 pomeranian, 1 boxer mix, 1 pit bull mix, 2 American eskimos, and have worked with various other breeds throughout my career.. of all the dogs that I have been responsible for training... the ones that took the least amount of time to train have been the CHI-CHIS... Just be as patient and consisted with them as you would be with any other animal you planned on training...

A different answer:Yes Chihuahuas are stubborn the majority of the time, and no you do not train them on their terms...And seeing how each dog is different it really doesn't matter what different kinds of dogs you have worked with (although if you wish to bring handling different breeds into the conversation, I have 5 Chihuahuas, 1 Dachshund, 1 min-pin, 2 large mutts, 1 Australian shepherd...also i have horses, 1 pig, cats, goats...shall i go on?) Ok now, to train your little dog you will most likely want to start with paper training, pick where you will want your litter box and put papers on the ground there...once the dog starts going on the papers, put the box down with papers in it, then eventually you can mix shredded newspaper with doggie litter, and then just doggie litter...good luck training! Also, Chihuahuas can be easily wounded by harsh words, never work on training you dog if you are upset over something, also praise them like crazy when they do what they're supposed to! Treats, bell rubs, ear scratches, whatever makes your dog happy :)

no, it just matters how you train them to potty, but it is best to train them when they are puppies.

potty training:

*no hitting them

*scold them when they potty were they are not suppose to go

*reward them when the potty in the right place

I had a chihuahua a long time ago and I thought I would loose my mind trying to potty train it. My husband found it roaming the streets. So I took it to the vet and he said if I figure out how I should call him because his wife couldnt pottytrain theirs. I finally got her trained. It took alot of patience praise time and love. No shouting or hitting just cheering and treats .

You can put a litter box outside where they go or just put some litter near where they go or you can just put treats in the litter box and have them go in it to explore.

Yes, but it isn't a natural instinct. Dogs have differently-wired brains than cats, so while it is possible, it is not the best decision for your puppy.
