Gunshot wounds are unpredictable puncture wounds that cause major tissue damage. Three factors work together to determine the severity of a gunshot wound:location, size of the bullet, speed of the bullet. The bigger the gun, the bigger the hole. The faster the speed, the more the damage. To treat, before help arrives, use universal precautions and personal protective equipment. Do not move the patient unless his life is in danger. Use basic first aid and CPR as needed, Control any bleeding. Seal chest wounds with plastic to prevent lung collaspe. If conscious, make them comfortable. Do not elevate the legs if wound is above the waist unless in the arm. No food or liquids.

First step: Call for help ASAP. The chances of surviving a bullet wound depend on how fast the victim gets to a hospital.

Now, assuming the wound wasn't cause by accident (in accidental shots everyone with a gun must put the safety on and keep the weapon aiming down), the first thing to do is to get yourself and (in case the victim's a third person) the hurt one to a safe position. This is important, never, ever run any risks, for you might be the only one capable to help and moaning on the ground ain't no good way to do that.

The second thing, is to evaluate the wound: deepness, caliber of shot, trauma place (where the bullet hits) and victim's current situation. That is, how much blood he\she has lost so far and if there's any signs of madness -common symptom in dangerous situations-. It is important for the person providing assistance to stay calmed.

When the damage has been calculated and the injury located, the helper must act... always put the heart beneath the wound level. That is, for example, if the wound's located in the legs, rise up the legs, this way the bleeding should slow down.

If the victim is not able to be moved, put it in a position that is comfortable for him\her and try to make pressure over the wound with a rag or clothe to stop the bleeding. If unconscious, make sure the victim is breathing and turn his head 45 degrees from the vertical position so he\she doesn't drown with his\her tongue. If the victim is not breathing, the helper should start CPR.

If a hurt person's taken to a hospital in the first 15 minutes, its chances of staying alive are greater than if not.

Answer:

Go to the hospital immediately. If the wound is bleeding signicantly a (preferably clean) cloth should be placed over the wound and pressure applied to stem the flow of blood.
