For a battery-operated smoke detector, you simply remove the battery. For a mains-powered smoke detector, the only way to disable it is to disable the mains power running to it.

However, both of these methods are not recommended, as people tend to forget to turn them back on. Instead, open a window and run a fan to evacuate the smoke.

Getting rid of a smoke alarm is not a good idea, they have been proven to save lives.

<<>>

When a smoke alarm had reached the end of its useful life it should be disposed of. If you have a single alarms from a residential facility, it may be acceptable to put it into the regular trash. If you have one from an industrial or commercial facility, or more than one or two, it is best to contact the manufacturer and as whether they will take it back for disposal. Otherwise, check with your city, county or state government for disposal streams they may have established.

It depends WHY it's beeping ! If it's beeping continuously, it's because you have overcooked something in the kitchen and smoke has got to the detector. Turn off the cooker and open some windows to provide ventilation to disperse the fumes. If there's no obvious cause, and it's a single beep followed by a long pause - it's probably due to the back-up battery being low - in which case, replace the battery !
