It is possible. The microphone is probably simply being played back through the speakers. In order to disable this functionality, follow these steps:
a) open your Play Control or Volume Panel (if you're using a non-Windows application to control volume, click Menu Start, select 'Run', type in "sndvol32" without the quotes and hit [OK])
b) in the Options menu, select Properties
c) ensure that you have Playback selected, find your microphone input (usually called "Microphone", but on Realtek integrated audio cards it can be named "Rear Pink In") and make sure it has a tick left of it
d) click [OK]
e) the microphone playback control should now show up in the program, find it and select "Mute" under it.
f) close the application
This should disable microphone playback. The procedure will not affect microphone recording capabilities (unless you're recording through Stereo Mix with some other Wave sounds, but if you are, you should already know what you're doing).
