∙ 11y agoAssuming the fluid is of uniform temperature and composition - or at least close enough as to make no significant difference - if a tube containing a liquid is open at both ends, the level of the liquid will be the same at both ends. If it wasn't then the combination of atmospheric pressure and hydrostatic pressure would cause it to equalize. The distance between the ends does not matter unless you start talking on the order of kilometers. Because of this, measurements taken against the level of fluid in the tube will always be against the same "zero" point and deviations from that height represents deviations from "level" relative to that zero point.
