Volume formulas vary based on what shape the object is. The volume of a cube or rectangular prism is length times width times height.
If you are attempting to measure the volume of an irregular object (such as a Golf ball, whistle, football et cetera), fill a graduated cylinder with a measurement of water. Record the measurement of the water without anything in it, then drop the object into the cylinder. Wait for the water to settle, then record the new measurement. Take the second measurement, subtract the first, and the result is your volume.
For example, a golf ball is dropped into a cylinder containing 50 ml of water. When the water settles, the line has moved to 75 ml. So, the volume of the golf ball is 25 cm cubed (1 ml = 1 cm cubed).
NOTE: Make sure that you are reading the measurements correctly (read the bottom of the bubble-like curve called the meniscus) and that the object you are measuring is completely submerged in the water.
This is a very broad question.
Volume of a cube, a rectangular prism, a cylinder, a regular prism, a sphere, an irregular solid? Then we have the volume of gases and liquids.
As a general rule if the solid is a regular prism then the volume is the area of the base x the height.
Volume of a cube = L x B X H
The L x B is the area of its base.
Volume of a rectangular prism = L x B x H
Same idea
Volume of a cylinder = pi x radius2 x H
The pi x radius2 is the area of the base.
A sphere has no base
Volume of sphere = 4/3 pi x r3
Volumes of irregular solids are measured by the volume of liquid they displace. Put them in a liquid and determine what the change in volume is by catching or observing the displace liquid.
Liquids have many containers that are graduated to show the volume and gases have to have the volume and pressure and temperature controlled as each changes the volume.
