Here's a good start: Michelangelo Buonarroti was born March 6, 1475 in the village of Caprese, Italy. He came from a wealthy Florence family and lived with his father who was briefly serving as a Florentine government agent. Michelangelo's mother died when he was six. Michelangelo had been drawn to art from the time he was a child. His father, however, tried to discourage him from being an artist because he considered his son's ambition to be below the family's social status. But nothing could extinguish the young boy's desire to paint, sculpt, and build. Thus he became the world famous artist, Michelangelo.

When Michelangelo turned thirteen, he became an apprentice of Domenico Ghirlandaio. Ghirlandaio was a very popular painter in Florence at the time. The apprenticeship did not last long, however.
