What you need to do is go to a store that sells violins. The person selling you the instrument will ask you to hold out your arm and put a violin under your chin like how you would usually hold it while playing. You then wrap your hand around the scroll (the swirled wooden end of the violin with the tuning pegs) and if it fits right in your palm, the violin is the right size.
It is measured by size: 4/4, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16. You can fit it to you by placing the violin under your chin and grabbing ther scroll with your left arm. If there is a small bend in your arm, then it is your right violin size. If not, go up a size for a big bend or down a size for no bend until you find the right size!!
Violins are usually measured in quarters but some vary. My violin, for example is a 7/8th in between a 3/4 and a 4/4. It was one bought in Austria so I don't know if that makes a difference.
If you want to see of it is right for you- hold the violin as you normally would except keep your arm straight. Curl your hand over the scroll a violin that is too big will be hard to reach over the scroll and one that is too small will have your arm bending.
Put the viola on your shoulder and see if you can put you fingers around the scroll. If there is still enough bend in the arm.. PERFECT!!
Turn your violin over and measure from the base of the neck to the bottom, straight down the middle. 14" is full size.

Absolutely! Fiddling is a technique that can be performed on any bowed string instrument. Although it is generally associted with the violin, there are many fiddle tunes for the viola. Mel Bay's Fiddling for Viola is a very large collection of fiddle music for the viola.
Violas range from 11 inches to 17 inches. They may be smaller than 11, but that is the smallest one i have seen. There are 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15.5, 16, 16.5, 17 inch violas. When you measure a viola, you measure the body (just the wood part, not the finger board and scroll)
It has a lot to do with the age of the player in relation to the length of the arm. An adult, with an arm 26" or longer would use a full size bow of 29.25". A 6/7 year old with an arm length of about 20" would use a bow length 24.5" Between this age and the adult age, a 27" length is usual. Under normal circumstances, a 15" viola would need a full size bow
The viola was created in the 1500s and our modern viola was created in the 19th century. The viola was made before the violin was!
Turn your viola over and measure its back from the base of the neck to the bottom, straight down the middle.
You should use a measuring tape and measure the arm length and width.
The viola is held on the left arm and the bow is held in the right hand. You may also pluck with your right hand. Lastly, you may pluck the viola holding it like a banjo.

On stringed instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and bass that use bows, tremolo is a very, very fast repetition of one note. You usually use a smaller, shorter, faster bow arm to do this. Use your wrist. don't even move your arm.
