The El Nino phase causes severe drought, especially in northern regions of Australia because of the weaker easterly trade winds which warm the surface of the Pacific Ocean meaning that rainfall patterns occur over the Pacific Ocean rather than over land. Lower than average rainfall leads to drought..which is what Australia experienced in 2009.

El Nino brings drought conditions to Australia. These effects often last for several years, and they are by no means restricted to one area of Australia. Lack of rainfall accompanying an El Nino can also affect the east coast, bordering the Pacific and the west coast, bordering the Indian ocean. The phenomena is actually equally likely to affect southern Australia as the north, and this is seen in the prevalence of the southern bushfire seasons.

Australia's severe bushfire seasons are often preceded by the El Nino phenomena, extending for any number of years. This was the case in the 1982-83 season, leading to the horrific Ash Wednesday bushfires, and again in 2008-09, leading to the even worse Victorian "Black Saturday" bushfires.
