It has also been much more toxic to human life than it is today. The Earth has shown a remarkable ability to survive any number of disasters including a collision that created the moon. In short, humans are not capable of destroying the Earth. Physics Today, several years ago, tackled the common talking point that our nuclear arsenal is capable of destroying several Earths. Not only did they disprove that claim, but they were able to demonstrate that we do not even have a sufficient nuclear arsenal to cause humans to become extinct! It is safe to say that the Earth will be around long after humans are gone.

To complete this answer, I will assume you want to know what Obama will actually do to improve the environment for human life. Obama has made claims to support reductions in carbon emissions, which is supposed to reduce global warming. Since the global temperature last year was so low that the increase in global temperature over the last one hundred years was erased in one year, it is unlikely that any intervention by the U.S. will make any appreciable difference in the cyclic nature of the climate. It is because of the recent decline in global temperature, that environmentalists have dropped the term "global warming" in favor of "climate change." Climate change could refer to anything, which makes it much easier to perpetuate the theory that humans, who contribute less than 1% of total carbon emissions (oceans are the biggest CO2 emitter), have an affect on global temperature. So, it is unclear if any of his environmental proposals, even if enacted, would "help" the environment.

Since there are no politicians on record as being in favor of dirty water or air, it is safe to conclude the Mr. Obama will continue reasonable efforts to reduce toxic chemicals in both. If you believe that reduction of carbon emissions is "helping" the environment, then perhaps the greatest method Mr. Obama could employ to reduce carbon emissions is to enact his tax policy. Mr. Obama has stated he would only enact his tax policy if the economy was not in a recession, which infers that his policy would negatively affect the economy. A slowdown in economic activity is the most effective way to reduce energy consumption. That method, of course, may not be entirely popular.
