MAC filtering takes network security to the next level by only granting access to specific network cards.

A MAC (media access control) address is a unique identifier for a network card; no two cards have the same MAC address, so it functions like a fingerprint - even a wireless card and an Ethernet card built-in to the same laptop won't have the same MAC address. Therefore, MAC address filtering adds security by only allowing network cards with the right "fingerprint" to access the network.

However, it should be noted that MAC address filtering is not a strong form of security. MAC addresses are extremely easy to "spoof" - that is, it's easy to fake the address of a legitimate network card. If an attacker is able to identify the MAC address of a permitted network card, they can masquerade as the legit card. Therefore, MAC address filtering is not a replacement for using encryption. MAC address filtering can help security if used in an environment running WPA.

Why is MAC filtering better than IP filtering for your home router?

The MAC address for each devices will not change but an IP address can be reused so using the MAC address for filtering means that the device will always be included whereas the device may be blocked if allocated a new IP address which has been blocked by the filter.

What is commonly used to restrict access to a network based on the physical hardware address of the clients network device?

You can enable MAC address (also know as Physical Address) filtering. MAC address filtering has two modes: 1. Allow access to listed MAC addresses 2. Deny access to listed MAC addresses.

Why is MAC address filtering considered a poor choice in securing a WLAN?

MAC addresses are easily spoofed.

What is Mac address filtering?

Media Access Control (MAC) address filtering is a little different from WEP or WPA. It doesn't use a password to authenticate users - it uses a computer's physical hardware. Each computer has its own unique MAC address. MAC address filtering allows only machines with specific MAC address access the network. You must specify which addresses are allowed when you set up your router. This method is very secure, but if you buy a new computer or if visitors to your home want to use your network, you'll need to add the new machines' MAC addresses to the list of approved addresses.

Which feature that you configured on the Linksys WRT300N makes you feel the most secure and why?

MAC address filtering uses the MAC address to identify which devices are allowed to connect to the wireless network. When a wireless client attempts to connect, or associate, with an AP it will send MAC address information. If MAC filtering is enabled, the wireless router or AP will look up its MAC address a preconfigured list. Only devices whose MAC addresses have been prerecorded in the router's database will be allowed to connect.

How does MAC address filtering enable wireless network security at the device level?

MAC address filter is a pretty secure way of rudimentary network security. Enabling it makes the network available only to know devices. However, this leaves it vulnerable to MAC address spoofing.

When you secure a wireless network using MAC address filtering is data sent over the network secure?

To make it secure you have to use encryption which is available in almost all routers.
