Benvolio and Romeo, while Romeo is caught in his trance about Rosalind, (the chaste he so wants to be with) a servant from the Capulet house comes across their path bearing invitations for select families to attend the ball Capulet is hosting. Romeo and Benvolio read the invitation for the servant who is illiterate. Benvolio then suggests to Romeo that the ball would be a great place for Romeo to meet girls far more fair than Rosalind. Romeo reluctantly obliges. They later attend the ball where Romeo meets Juliet for the first time.

Capulet gives a list of names to his servant and tells him to invite the people on the list to his ball. The servant can't read and so asks Romeo to read the list out to him which is how they discover Capulet is having a ball and that Rosaline, who Romeo believes he loves, is invited. So they decide to go to the ball even though as Montague's, they aren't invited.

They accidentally bump into Capulet's servant, who is to deliver invitations to the people on the list he has been given. Unfortunately he cannot read, so he is searching for a literate person to help him out. Romeo looks like a literate man, and when the servant asks him, he agrees. As a result, he and Benvolio learn that the guest list includes his friend Mercutio and his crush Rosaline. This might not be the first he has heard of the party, since Capulet calls it "an old accustomed feast" which suggests that this is a regular affair. What is key to Romeo is not that there is a party but that Rosaline will be a guest.
