The story is from the book of Ruth in The Bible.

Noami and her family moved to Moab from Israel due to a famine in the land. Then Noami's husband died. Ruth was a Moabite woman who married one of Naomi's sons. After about 10 years both of Noami's sons died and Noami decided to move back to Israel. Ruth chose to go with her mother-in -law even though Noami tried to convince her to stay in Moab in order to perhaps find another husband. Ruth is loyal to Naomi in all ways and helps her, even getting food for them to live on by gleaning the fields after the workers are finished. She is noticed by Boaz, the owner of the fields and he tells his workers to leave her plenty to gather. Long story short, they end up married and she becomes King David's great grandmother. King David is the line through which Jesus is eventually born. The story suggests she is blessed for her loyalty and faithfulness by becoming an ancestor to both King David and Jesus.

In the New Testament, there are two different genealogies of Jesus, both going back through his earthly father, Joseph. The genealogy in Matthew's Gospel gives Ruth as an ancestor of Jesus at Matthew 1:5. However, biblical scholars dismiss both genealogies as Christian midrash and say that we have no way of really knowing who Christ's ancestors were.

She and her husband Boaz are part of Jesus' lineage. Boaz was King David's great-grandfather, and Jesus is descended from the line of David, so they are ancestors from way back.
