IF THE SEASON STARTED TODAY, AND THE YANKEES WON, AND THE RED SOX DIDN'T PLAY YET THE LEAD WOULD BE HALF A GAME, IF THE SOX PLAYED THE NXT DAY, AND LOST, AND THE YANKEES DID NOT PLAY , THE SOX WOULD BE 1 FULL GAME BEHIND, 1-0 VS 0-1. SO EACH GAME IS A HALF A GAME IN THE STANDINGS UNTIL THE OTHER TEAM COMPLETES ITS GAME.

Half a game out means the two teams haven't played the same number of games. It means that the two teams have either the same number of losses and one of them has one more win than the other, or they have the same number of wins and one of them has one fewer losses. For example: Cardinals are 75-70 and Brewers are 75-71. This whole "games back" thing is calculated like this: Cardinals are 75-70, Brewers are 73-71, and Cubs are 71-73, for example. Take the Cards wins (75) and subtract the Brewers wins (73), then take the Brewers losses (71) and subtract the Cards losses (70). Add them together, and you come up with 3. Divide by 2, and you get 1.5. The Brewers are 1.5 games behind the Cards. Now, do the same thing for the Cards and the Cubs, and you see that the Cubs are 3.5 games behind the Cards.

This happens when one team has played less games than the other team, for example if team a's record is 70-50, and team b's record is 69-50, team b would be 1/2 games behind team a.

If there is a team with a 22-3 record and a team with a 22-4 record, the team is one- half game behind. The same goes for a team with a 14-23 team and a 15-23 team.

When comparing MLB records how can one team be one half game head of another?

A team can be a half game ahead of another in the standings if they have not palyed the same number of games. For example if team A has a record of 8-2 and team be has a record of 7-2, team A would be a half game ahead. If team B wins its 10th game, they would have the same record as team A and they would be "even". If team B loses its 10th game, they would be 7-3 and a full game back of team A.

How can a baseball team be up in standing by half game?

This occurs when two teams have played an uneven amount of games. Say one team's record is 84-35, which is 119 games. The team behind them by a half game would be 84-36, at 120 games. Thus, the team with fewer losses is ahead, only because they have not played the same amount of games.

What is a game in hand when referring to standings?

That means one team has played one less game than another team so they have one more game left to play than the other team. If two teams are fighting for a playoff spot and Team A has 3 games left and Team B has 2 games left, Team A would have 'a game in hand' over Team B because they have one more game left to play.

What does half game back mean in baseball?

This is how the team stacks up in a conference. For example the leading team has 9 wins and 1 (900 average) and the next team has 8 wins and 1 loss (889 average) and is a half a game back from the leading team. A team can only move up or down (1) half game per win or loss. Since the second team has one less total games played, and if they win that game, they will move up a half a game and tie the leader. If that team losses, they fall back one game.

How are the standings figured out in baseball as far as a half game and a whole game?

To determine how many games the second place team is behind the first place team, find the difference in wins of the two teams, the difference of the number of losses of the two teams, add those two numbers together and then divide by two. Example A: The first place team's Won/Loss record is 40-20 and the second place team's record is 38-22. (40 - 38) + (22 - 20) / 2 is the same as (2 + 2) / 2 which equal 2. The second place team is 2 games behind the first place team. Example B: The first place team's Won/Loss record is 40-20 and the second place team's record is 37-22. (40 - 37) + (22 - 20) / 2 is the same as (3 + 2) / 2 which equal 2.5. The second place team is 2 and a halfgames behind the first place team.

If a game is called in the middle of an inning, but it is still a complete game (ie, the team that is behind when the game is called had five full innings to score runs), then all stats in that first half of an inning count.
