Certain areas can only hold so many animals in a certain period of time. Stocking rate is the term that identifies how many animals are able to be grazed per acre during a grazing season. Stocking rate differs according to the habitat that cattle are held in. It also differs according to how they are managed. A higher number of head can be grazed on a pasture if it is being rotationally grazed. If the pasture is continuously grazed, a lower population is needed. Pastures with higher forage biomass require a higher herd count over one that tends to be lower in forage biomass.
