∙ 13y agoA fingerprint scanner works by emitting a focused light (usually LED) which is reflected back by the fingerprint surface. Because the raised portion reflects back light more effectively than the non-raised portions, a computer can easily determine the pattern and record them. A computer then can determine the characteristics of that fingerprint image, (i.e. ridge ending - a line that stops, bifurcation - two line come together as one, ridge point - a dot, and enclosure - a set of bifurcations that form an enclosed circle-like characteristic.) A mathematical equation is then used to identify certain points and count the number of ridges between them.
